How do we give children opportunities for active learning, cultural exchange, and interactions sparked by curiosity and questions, especially as media and technology become even more embedded in their lives? Fascinating answers are emerging from the Learning Sciences Exchange, a groundbreaking fellowship program testing a new model for collaboration and transformation. LSX, as we call it, brings together small teams of talented people—unknown to each other, from different parts of the world and in different sectors—who collaborate on new approaches to learning while also learning from each other at the same time. Â
Â
Join us on August 10th to hear the stories of these LSX Fellows who hail from the fields of entertainment, journalism, social entrepreneurship, education policy, and the science of learning. After working together for two years, remotely across multiple time zones and only once in-person, these LSX fellows will share their ideas and reflect on what it takes to break out of one’s bubble. We welcome discussion of your reflections too on how LSX can grow and spread this model of cross-sector collaboration.
This biannual event features keynote remarks from NPR education reporter Anya Kamenetz (author of The Stolen Year) and our panel moderators Brenda Jones-Harden of the University of Maryland, Marisa Gerstein Pineau of the FrameWorks Institute, and Jessica Sager of All Our Kin. It culminates with the announcement of our next cohort of LSX fellows: 15 mid-career innovators from seven countries now part of an ever-growing network, rippling outward yet also bringing change and innovation back to their own communities, all based on the science of how children learn best. How do I find out more about the Learning Sciences Exchange fellowship program?Â
The Learning Sciences Exchange, called LSX for short, is a one-of-a-kind fellowship program that brings together 15 mid-career fellows, three each from five sectors: science, policy, journalism, entertainment, and social entrepreneurship. Fellows hail from multiple countries and participate for two years. At the LSX Summit on August 10, 2022 we are announcing our third cohort of fellows. Previous fellows participated for 2018-2020 and 2020-2022.
Â
Who runs the program?
New America administers the fellowship program, under the leadership of Lisa Guernsey, senior fellow and strategic advisor for the Education Policy Program, with LSX Coordinator Elise Franchino. The program was co-founded by three people: Guernsey, a journalist and former director of the Teaching, Learning & Tech team and Early Education Initiative at New America; Roberta Golinkoff of the University of Delaware; and Kathy Hirsh-Pasek of Temple University and the Brookings Institution The latter two are translational scientists who study the science of learning and its impact on policy, education, and media.  Â
Who funds the program?
The Jacobs Foundation has funded the LSX program since its genesis in 2018. It is also a partner, with New America and learning scientists Kathy Hirsh-Pasek and Roberta Golinkoff, in the design and operation of the program. The Jacobs Foundation, based in Zurich, Switzerland, invests in the future of young people, to ensure that children and youth receive better opportunities for positive development and equitable access to education.Â
I’m an investor/funder interested in supporting an LSX project showcased during the LSX Summit. Who should I contact?
Great! We welcome interest from foundations, corporations, and start-up investors who can help our LSX Fellows take their prototypes and ideas to the next level. Please contact New America’s senior fellow and strategic advisor Lisa Guernsey at guernsey@newamerica.org.Â
